Obituary of George Saunders
In Loving Memory
The world has lost an exceptional human being; George’s Legacy is immeasurable. His life will be defined by the tremendous impact he had on the community at large, customers, friends and especially family. Born October 5, 1943 passed September 13, 2024 at the age of 80.
His wealth of knowledge in such a diverse spectrum, made him an outstanding conversationalist in many fields of expertise. He was eager to explore and bring to fruition new ideas and products in the workplace. Always learning and taking on the challenge that might lie ahead, he could master anything he put his mind to.
In the community, he loved to coach baseball to the younger kids, teaching them, that winning wasn’t the most important goal of the game, but rather working as a team and leaving no child to sit on the bench unnoticed. George loved all sports and played several himself. His teams were the Toronto Blue Jays, Buffalo Bills, NASCAR, Pro golf, tennis, soccer and the Olympics.
He was an outstanding patient advocate and representative with numerous organizations, including ARTC; promoting the importance of knowledge about Aphasia and HHT, which he suffered from his entire life. After his massive stroke in 2017, he became part of the ARTC group, not only attending the program, but being an advocate for others during group sessions in the Mall, and being an intricate spokesperson; helping prepare a knowledgeable brochure, creating a flag, and wording that went on the shirts and hats. He has proudly flown his Aphasia flag on his flagpole at his home. He took great pride in handing out these brochures to Doctor’s offices, drugstores, hospitals, and stores, to better educate others how to respond to people who have Aphasia.
George was a Proud Owner of W.E. Saunders and Sons Painters Ltd. from 1969 until 2011. Under his tenure, the company won many prestigious awards and honours for outstanding work ethics, creativity and of course high-quality workmanship. Namely, one being the Avon Theatre in Stratford. With a reputation for knowledge, problem-solving and practicality, this preceded him in retirement.
Throughout his life, he was a good Samaritan, quietly and humbly helping those in need. Camp Trillium was his inspiration. His adventurous nature took him and Marg on beautiful holidays. His smile, his hugs and deep love and devotion to his family will be missed by his wife of 57 years, Margaret (Casey) Stengel, and his devoted son Greg. He is survived by his sister Joyce of B.C. and by his brother David (Marilyn) of Simcoe. Predeceased by his brothers Wilfred (Marguerite) and Stanley (Janet), by his sister Connie Swick (Gordon), his brother-in-law Garry and by his parents, William and Beatrice (Elliott) Saunders. Survived by Margaret’s sisters, Gwen, Karla, Patti, Michele and their families. Member of St. Alban’s Anglican Church and was a crucifer for many years. Many thanks to Dr. Thorogood, Rollins, Ahrens and Bak for their care and compassion. To the VON who came for six and a half years, especially Cindy and Andrea. For all the love and support from family and friends, as the last couple of years have had many challenges.
