Obituary of Martin Kowanetz

Mr. Martin Kowanetz, of Delhi, passed away peacefully at the Joseph Brant Hospital, Burlington on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 in his 88th year. Martin was born in Hamilton, Ontario, on July 27, 1939. In 1944, he and his family moved to Delhi to operate a tobacco farm, laying the foundation for a family legacy that endured for generations. A lifelong interest in history, nurtured through listening to his father’s conversations, led Martin to earn an Honours Bachelor of History degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1962. He married Mary Vanpraet on December 28, 1963, beginning a partnership that spanned more than six decades. A dedicated educator, Martin taught high school history at Delhi District Secondary School for 33 years, sharing his passion for the past with generations of students. His love of local and family history extended beyond the classroom, leading him to co-author Our Second Home, a history of the German Hall, and to write the Kowanetz/Liptai family history story. In his leisure time, Martin enjoyed playing chess, taking brisk walks, gardening, and reading. He also had a special affection for Chihuahuas, and treasured the companionship of Molly, Meg, and Maggie throughout the years. Beloved husband of the Late Mary (Vanpraet) Kowanetz (2022). Loving father of Maurice Kowanetz (Patricia) and Jessica Shannon (Jeff). Cherished grandfather of Beau (Max), Jacob, Sam (Maxie), Andrew and Patrick. Dearest brother of Frieda Young (Late Henry 1991). Also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by parents Lorenz (1954) and Frances (Liptai) Kowanetz (1971), and by his two brothers: Lorenz Kowanetz (2007) (Lena) and Joseph Kowanetz (2015) (Late Lena 2022). Also predeceased by brother-in-law Pierre (2026) and sister-in-law Georgette (2024) Vanpraet. Respecting Martin’s Wishes, a Private Family Funeral Service has taken place with Inurnment in Delhi Cemetery.
