Obituary of Shirley Benko
InLoving Memory
Mrs. Shirley Benko of Mount Pleasant passed suddenly at the Brantford General Hospital, on Friday, July 24, 2026 in her 91st year. She was a Former Member of the Catholic Women’s League at St. Michael’s, Walsh, St. Mary’s, Simcoe and Our Lady of the Assumption, Brantford. Shirley was the ultimate home-maker. In earlier years, she took great pride in her immaculate home and beautiful farm in Norfolk County with her husband George. She always ensured there was an abundance of delicious home-cooked meals and fresh Belgian and Croatian baking on hand for family, friends and farm crews. She managed all this while working in the orchard, the fields, the barn and raising two daughters. After they moved to Simcoe, she enjoyed wintering in Englewood, Florida with George fishing from the beach and Shirley cooking the fish for supper. After George’s passing, she loved living at Karen’s, volunteering at St. Mary’s Church in Brantford on their Funeral Luncheon Committee, working on her puzzles, chatting on the phone with friends and family, playing with the dogs, and celebrating important milestones with family. Although she missed George terribly, she found great comfort in being around her grandchildren. Former Shirley DeWitte. Beloved wife of the Late George Benko (2009). Devoted mother of Cindy Benko (John “J.” Maxwell) and Karen Austin (Todd). Adoring grandmother of Kevin Singer and Laura Austin. Also survived by several nieces, nephews and in-laws in Canada and Europe. Predeceased by her two sisters: Rosie DeWitte (1999) and Elsie Benko (2017) (Late Fred 2018). In keeping with Shirley’s wishes, a Private Family Service will be held. Inurnment in Delhi Cemetery. Memorial Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Charity of your Choice can be made at the MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, Delhi (519) 582-1290 (www.mfh.care) and will be gratefully appreciated by the family.
